What COVID Protocols Does Belize Have for International Travel?
Planning a Belize vacation for 2022 certainly comes with its challenges. Nearly two years removed from the international spread of COVID-19 has a lot of people scratching their heads, wondering: How safe is my family when traveling out of the country?
By now, the CDC and other credible organizations have provided guidance for domestic and international travel – particularly by sea and plane. Recommendations for safe travel to Belize will depend on current COVID infection numbers and the traveler’s vaccination status. That said, protocols for traveling to Belize are largely similar to any other vacation spot.
COVID Preventative Directions for Belize Travelers
Before checking out lodging or the scope of activities to work into your itinerary, it’s vital that you have an understanding of Belize’s current COVID mandates and guidelines.
Travel Testing
Upon arrival in Belize, visitors must present a negative COVID-19 test – even if they are vaccinated. The only exception is children under five, who don’t need a negative test presented. This test should be taken within 96 hours of travel for PCR tests and 48 hours of arrival for rapid antigen tests. Those traveling by land must take a COVID-19 test at the border.
Safe Distancing & Masks
Belize is serious about taking care of country residents and visitors alike. Enforcement of physical distancing measures in public spaces and capacity restrictions at restaurants can be found throughout the nation. Such restrictions, at the time of this blog posting, include a 50% occupancy cap in restaurants as well as a daily curfew.
There are also mandatory enforcements of masks in public spaces. In addition to adhering to local and national mandates, it’s also recommended that you wear a mask and exercise safe distancing when in close proximity to groups who are not of your own party.
What if I Have COVID Symptoms During My Belize Vacation?
If you exhibit COVID-like symptoms, immediately inform your lodge or hotel manager and they’ll implement their COVID response plan. Like elsewhere in the world, a positive test in Belize will result in a 14-day quarantine requirement. For this reason, be sure you’ve obtained travel insurance prior to arrival.
What if Someone Else at the Resort Has Symptoms?
According to the Belize Tourism Board, this is dependent on the Ministry of Health and Wellness’ current contact tracing exercise at the time when these symptoms are reported. Your resort or hotel will utilize an appropriate communication plan and provide any necessary steps for you.
Can I Be Tested Before I Leave Belize?
Yes, the Ministry of Health and Wellness of Belize now offers COVID testing for travelers heading to Canada, the United States, and other locations requiring proof of negative tests for entry. So you shouldn’t have to worry about whether you’ll be prevented from re-entry, provided you receive negative test results.
Other Important Matters to Note
If you have recently recovered from COVID-19—and the recovery is documented—within the past 90 days, you’re not required to have a test following your travels. This is because, as stated by the CDC, people can test positive for up to 90 days post-diagnosis without the risk of spreading the virus to others.
